Three new types of Genetically engineered potatoes will hit us after the September harvest in Idaho. They will be planted this spring by Simplot Co., an agribusiness giant. These three varieties of potatoes, Russet Burbank, Ranger Russet, and Atlantic, are genetically engineered to resist the pathogen causing the plant disease called late blight, and to keep them from bruising, getting black spots, turning brown when sliced, and of course, to have a longer shelf life. Who doesn’t want fresh-looking potatoes which have been sitting in the grocery bins for 3 months? I don’t, and you don’t either, I guess.
To rub salt into the wound, Simplot claims that these potatoes will be “cancer-fighting” because they will produce less acrylamides. It would be laughable if it was not so sad, knowing the growing evidences of harmful effects from GMO and the pesticides associated, cancer being possibly one.
But it’s not the first false claim we heard from the GMO consortium and their lackeys. For a long time, the FDA has been lying to us by stating that the overwhelming consensus among scientists was that GMOs were safe and that there has been sufficient studies to prove it.
Unfortunately for them, a coalition of nonprofit organizations represented by a renown lawyer, was able to successfully sue the FDA, forcing them to release declassified documents regarding GMOs. The documents clearly showed that the FDA ignored the safety warnings of its own scientists and covered up all evidence that GMOs were unsafe.
As we are still deprived of GMO labeling, buying organic or NON-GMO verified potatoes, or even growing your own, will be the only way to eat them safely beginning this Fall.
